Roger Van den Bergh is Professor of Law and Economics at the Law Faculty of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He holds Europe’s first full Law and Economics-professorship at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is also Director of the Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics (RILE) and President of the European Association of Law and Economics (EALE). He studied law career at the University of Antwerp (UIA), from which he graduated with honours in 1975). In 1982 he was he was awarded the doctoral degree summa cum laude for his dissertation on buying power and price competition (“Inkoopmacht en prijsconcurrentie”). Roger’s scientific publications cover a wide range of topics in Law and Economics. He published extensively in both books and leading journals on Competition Law and Economics, European Law and Economics, the Economic Analysis of Consumer Law, and of Tort Law and Insurance. Roger co-edits the Edward Elgar series on New Horizons in Law and Economics. He also serves as Associate Editor of the International Review of Law and Economics, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Review of Law and Economics, as well as of the Economische en Statistische Berichten. Roger’s current research is on the reception of economic arguments in European competition law, the economic analysis of European harmonisation and the subsidiarity principle in European law, issues of public safety and security in society, including the dealings with catastrophic accidents, and the economics of judicial decision making. He lectures a most diverse range of classes, spanning the regular Dutch curriculum’s mandatory initiation into Law and Economics, the Institute’s (post-)graduate studies in law and economics courses on Competition Law and Economics, European Law and Economics, Law and Economics before the Courts and the Economics of Regulation, as well as a host of invited lectures across the Netherlands and Europe. Besides his regular academic tasks, Roger also co-ordinates the “European Master Programme in Law and Economics”, a conglomerate of 17 partner universities across Europe and the world.
